Slovenia’s Primož Roglič won the stage nine time trial in the Giro d’Italia today to move back up to second place in the overall standings.

The Jumbo-Visma rider is now 1min 50sec behind Italy’s Valerio Conti, who has a combined total of 36hr 08min 32sec – but crucially all his main rivals for the general classification in this International Cycling Union (UCI) World Tour event are behind him.

Belgium’s Lotto-Soudal rider Victor Campenaerts lost 11 seconds to him after the chain came off his bike in rainy conditions on the 34.8km course from Riccione to San Marino, but was still second fastest on the day.

Britain’s Simon Yates, riding for Mitchelton-Scott, also lost ground after a disappointing ride.

Nans Peters of France is third in the overall standings, 31 seconds behind the Slovenian.

Roglič finished in 51min 52sec on the day.

Bauke Mollema of the Netherlands was third, a minute behind, with Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali fourth at 1;05.

Conti finished 38th on the day, at 3;34 behind the winner.

Tomorrow is a rest day and the Tour resumes on Tuesday with a 145km stage 10 from Ravenna to Modena.

The Tour will conclude with a 17km time trial in Verona – stage 21 – on June 2.
