London 2012 quad singles gold medallist Noam Gershony led the way for the home team as they finished strongly at the Larry and Mary Greenspon Israel Tennis Centre to earn a meeting with Japan, the top seeds.

Gershony, a former member of the Israeli armed forces who suffered serious injury in 2006 when the Apache helicopter he was piloting crashed, produced another fine opening singles rubber for his country as he beat Donald Ramphadi 6-0, 6-3.

His playing partner Shraga Weinberg, the former world number one, received huge support in his second singles match against former US Open champion Lucas Sithole but lost 7-5, 7-5.

The Israeli pairing, who claimed bronze together in the London 2012 Paralympics, then won the deciding doubles match 6-0, 7-5 to set up a fascinating final.

Japan earned their place in the final with a similarly dramatic win over Britain.

After Mitsuteru Moroishi had given Japan a 1-0 lead by winning his opening singles match against Antony Cotterill, their world number three Koji Sugeno had the chance to decide the tie in his meeting with world number four Andy Lapthorne.

But the Briton recovered from dropping the opening set to earn a 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Two years ago Antony Cotterill and Lapthorne won the deciding doubles rubber against Israel in the World Team Cup quad final.

On this occasion, however, they were unable to halt the Japanese progress as Moroishi and Sugeno won 6-2, 6-2 to complete a 2-1 victory.

The tournament continues tomorrow.
