Defending champion Brooks Koepka shot a course-record 63 to lead after the opening round of the United States Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Championship at Long Island in New York.

The American began his title defence paired with the resurgent Tiger Woods, fresh from his fifth Masters title last month.

The duo endured differing fortunes at the Black Course in Bethpage State Park.

Koepka enjoyed a superb opening day as the American produced a seven-under par round to finish top of the leaderboard.

His round included seven birdies and no bogeys.

The 29-year-old, who is chasing a fourth major, enjoys a one shot lead over New Zealand’s Danny Lee.

England's Tommy Fleetwood is third after he carded a three-under par round of 67.

France's Mike Lorenzo-Vera is one of five players on two-under.

Woods endured a difficult start as the 15-time major winner began with a double bogey.

A second double bogey dented his challenge further, with the American eventually ending the day on two-over par, nine shots off the lead.

Two-time champion Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland also made a stuttering start.

He joined Woods on two-over par.
