Australia’s James Hodgson, who has led the sailing since the start at the Arafura Games beng held in Darwin, took gold today when he finished clear of New Zealand’s Megan Thomson.

The all-female crew headed by India’s Taramati Mariwade and supplemented by Australians who answered her call earlier this year for back-up in order to be able to compete, took bronze.

The sailing event involved a round robin of match racing by eight teams in Elliott 7m keelboats.

In the men’s football event, Northern Knights earned an emphatic win in the final, beating Indigenous Roos 5-0.

NT Wha Whas claimed third place with a 3-1 win over Timorese United.

In tomorrow’s netball final, Australlian Defence Force look as if they need to live up to their name against a free-scoring Fiji team which beat Brunei Darussalam 90-16 in their semi-final,

Philippines, with a 5-3 win over Cambodia, and East Kalimantan, with a 5-0 win over Papau, booked their places in tomorrow’s badminton final .

The two beaten semi-finalists will play for bronze before the gold medal match.

In men’s basketball, Philippines, who finished top of Pool A, will meet Pool B winners Northern Top End in tomorrow’s semi-finals, with the other semi being contested by Pool C winners WA Indigenous and New Caledonia, who had the best record of second-placed teams.

Tomorrow’s women’s basketball final will be contested by Chinese Taipei, who finished top of qualifying with five wins out of five and beat New Caledonia 92-45 in their semi-final, and Northern Territory, who beat Australian Defence Force 73-58.

In men’s beach volleyball, Lampard and Landers meet Australian compatriots Dempsey and Phillips in the first of the semi-finals at Darwin Waterfront tomorrow, while Amora and Gilbuena of the Philippines await the identify of their opponents in the second semi-final.

The semi-final line-up tomorrow in the women’s beach volleyball will be Vanuatu’s Ravo and Toko against Chang and Hu of Chinese Taipei, and Victoria’s Tromp and Donlan against a second Vanuatu pairing, Iatika and Pata.

A total of 13 boxing finals – five of them involving women – will be held tomorrow.

This is the 13th edition of an event that launched in 1991 and which takes its name from the Arafura Sea, which lies between northern Australia and Southeast Asia.

The 2003 edition was cancelled following concerns over the SARS virus and the 2013 edition was cancelled by the newly-elected CLP Government on the grounds it cost too much to run.

This is the first edition since 2011.

Athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, football, indoor volleyball, muaythai, netball, sailing, swimming, sepak takraw, squash, table tennis, tennis and weightlifting are among the sports on the programme.
