Azerbaijan’s Rostislav Pevtsov and Poland’s Alicja Ulatowska claimed aquathlon titles as the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Multisport World Championships continued in Pontevedra.

The aquathlon saw competitors tackle a one kilometre swim course and 5km run.

Pevtsov, who has enjoyed success in sprint distance triathlon events, emerged the winner of the men’s competition.

He came out of the swim in 13th place, some 47 seconds slower than leader Kevin Tarek Vinuela Gonzalez of Spain.

Pevtsov stormed through the field on the run section, the Azeri athlete completing the event in 28min 52sec.

Gonzalez held on to claim the silver medal as he crossed the finish line in 29:15.

Russia’s Dmitry Polyanskiy was seven seconds adrift to round off the podium places.

A strong swim provided the platform for Ulatowska to triumph in the women’s race, as she left the water a second behind leader Bragmayer Zsanett of Hungary.

And Ulatowska edged out her rival in the run to claim gold in 33:10.

Zsanett was forced to settle for the silver medal after ending five seconds back.

Itzel Arroyo Aquino gave one of the strongest runs in the field to rise up to third, the Mexican clocking 33:28.

The Championships will conclude on Saturday (April 4) with the long-distance races and aquabike.
