Ahmed Ali produced a continental record in the men’s African Weightlifting Championships in Cairo.

The Egyptian impressed in front of his home crowd on the final day of the Championships.

He achieved a clean and jerk lift of 200 kilograms in the men’s 89kg at Cairo International Stadium.

That effort was one kilogram more than the previous record.

His compatriot Mohammed Selim also set a record in the men’s 96kg.

He produced a snatch lift of 170kg in the final.

It bettered his previous mark of 168kg.

The host nation were joined at the Championships by athletes from Algeria, Botswana, Cameroon and Kenya.

Competitors from Tunisia, Uganda, Lesotho, Ghana, Madagascar, Nigeria, Morocco, South Africa, Mauritius and Libya also took part.
