Michael Shinohara celebrated victory on the first day of United World Wrestling’s Oceania Cadet, Junior and Senior Championships.

The opening day focused on Greco-Roman wrestling events in Leo Palace Resort Zeifro Banquet Hall.

Guam’s Shinohara secured victory in the men’s under-87 kilogram competition by beating Palau’s Skarlee Renguul.

He triumphed by pinning his opponent in the final.

“We don’t normally train for Greco but there are a lot of things that translate to freestyle,” Shinohara told the Guam Daily Post.

“I’m very happy that came out that way.”

Shinohara has qualified for the World Wrestling Championships following his victory.
