Turkey's karate stars shone at the WKF Karate1-Premier League in Rabat ©WKF

A number of Turkish karatekas qualified for the finals of the World Karate Federation (WKF) Karate1-Premier League event in Rabat.

Eray Samdan began his country's successful day by beating Uzbekistan's Sadriddin Saymatov 2-0 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah multi-purpose stadium. 

This saw him reach the gold medal match of the male kumite -60kg. 

He will face Kazakhstan's Darkhan Assadilov, who impressed in the semi-finals with a 7-3 victory over world champion Angelo Crescenzo of Italy.

Turkey's Serap Ozcelik then progressed to her third female kumite -50kg final of the year, having defeated Austria's Bettina Plank by judges' decision.

Her next opponent will be Egypt’s Radwa Sayed after she won against Belarus’ Mariya Koulinkovitch 4-1. 

Burak Uygur was Turkey's third finalist of the day, beating Japan’s Hiroto Shinohara in the semi-finals of the male kumite -67kg by decision.

The other finalist, Egypt’s Ali Elsawy, also progressed courtesy of a decision over Japan’s Nakano Soichiro.

The competition is due to continue tomorrow.
