Linnea Gonzales quickly equalised but in the final minute, Louise Versavel got a faint touch to Gerniers’ fine pass into the circle, diverting through keeper Kelsey Bing’s legs.

“We were really happy because we didn’t expect to score in the last seconds,” said Belgium’s Barbara Nelen.

“It was a really difficult game, we managed it well and our keeper [Aisling D’Hooghe] did a good job.

“We didn’t play really well but we won, so that is enough.”

In the men’s competition, Belgium crushed Spain 7-3 to reclaim top spot in the standings.

Doubles from Florent van Aubel and Tom Boon, alongside efforts from Cedric Charlier, Felix Denayer and Arthur van Doren saw the home side roar into a seven-goal advantage.

Pau Quemada struck twice and Enrique Gonzales once to restore some pride for Spain.

On Saturday, Netherlands men take on Spain in Rotterdam, while Argentina welcome the men’s and women’s teams of New Zealand to Rosario.
