Ryals takes the role having recently worked with the Paralympic team as a coach at the 2018 Para Pan American Championships.

USA Archery state he brings 25-years of experience in teaching and coaching archery, as well as "extensive experience in archery product design and exceptional skills in team building".

The organisation added that Ryals had achieved personal success as an archer and a coach on the national and international stage.

"I am thankful for this opportunity and am very excited to work with the incredibly passionate and dedicated archers of the US Para archery team," Ryals said.

"We are fortunate to have great talent in our current team and I look forward to working with the athletes to build on their successes.

"We will grow awareness, innovate technology and work together to adapt, overcome and create a lasting dynasty."

Ryals is a USA Archery Level 4-NTS coach. 

He was named USA Archery's and the United States Olympic Committee Developmental Coach of the Year in 2014.

USA Archery claim the appointment comes at a key time as archers prepare for the 2019 World Archery Para Championships in  's-Hertogenbosch and Tokyo 2020.

Ryals will be tasked with developing competitive excellence and growing a pool of talent through recruitment, outreach and education initiatives.

"We are excited to have George serve as the Paralympic head coach," said Mary Emmons, USA Archery chief of sport performance.

"His experience in leading teams and developing competitive high-performance athletes will be a great asset to the Para programme.

"I am confident his coaching expertise and vast knowledge of archery will help our Para programme reach new heights in the coming years."

United States earned one Paralympic Games medal in archery at Rio 2016 when Andre Shelby triumphed in the men's individual compound open event.
