Daniel Bali followed up his first-place finish in mixed pairs qualifying by topping the rankings in the first round of individual men’s action at the International Gymnastics Federation Aerobic World Cup in Cantanhede in Portugal.

The Hungarian had starred in mixed qualifying alongside Fanni Mazacs yesterday and scored 22.300 to finish first again at Os Marialvas Sports Hall.

A world silver medallist, Bali had been billed as the pre-competition favourite.

And he was the only gymnast to score more than 22 points today, finishing ahead of Russia’s Roman Semenov and Mexico’s Ivan Veloz.

They scored 21.750 and 21.550, respectively.

Eleven athletes made it through to tomorrow’s final, the last to qualify being Turkey’s Emir Erisik, who scored 20.050.

In qualifying for the individual women’s event, Turkey's Ayse Onbasi led the way with 20.850.

Russia’s world silver medallist Anastasiia Zubina, widely considered the favourite, ended seventh on 19.900.

Once again, 11 athletes made it through, including Portugal’s Sara Silva who finished 10th.

Hungary and Bulgaria topped the standings in trios and groups qualifying, respectively.

Bali, Mazacs and Albert Farkas scored 22.116 for Hungary in the trios while the Bulgarian group scored 21.805 in their event.

All finals will go ahead tomorrow.
