The event at HBF Stadium is a qualifier for the 2019 World League with four teams from each tournament qualifying for the super finals alongside the top three teams from the FINA/European Aquatics Federation Europa Cup finals and the host nations.

Australia, silver medallists at the 2018 FINA World Cup, headline Group A in the men’s competition.

They will go up against Canada, Japan and South Africa.

Group B comprises Argentina, China, Kazakhstan and New Zealand.

Notable exceptions are Brazil and the United States, both of whom qualified for the FINA World Championships through the American tournament earlier this year.

China, Japan, New Zealand and the US are in Group A of the women’s competition.

Group B consists of FINA World Cup bronze medallists Australia, Canada, Kazakhstan and South Africa.

The HBF stadium hosted FINA World Championships in 1991 and 1998, a women's water polo World Cup in 2002, the World Masters Championships of 2008, three FINA Junior Women's World Championships and one FINA Junior Men's World Championships.

The 50 metres outdoor pool being used for the men's and women's tournaments has been the scene for many major swimming world records, including German Jorge Hoffman's 1,500m victory over Australian Kieren Perkins in 1991.

The 10-lane outdoor pool has been used sparingly for water polo, although in 1998 the medal finals for both men and women were staged there.

Most of the other events, including the 2006 Commonwealth Championships, were held in the indoor 50m or the outside water polo pool.

Action in Perth is due to run through to Sunday (March 31).

The men's super final will be in Serbia’s capital Belgrade from June 18 to 23, while the women's will be staged in Budapest in Hungary from June 4 to 7.
