American star Eli Dershwitz will begin his quest for glory at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Men’s Sabre World Cup in Budapest against Hungary’s Bence Gemesi after the home favourite came through the pool stage and preliminary rounds today. 

Gemesi advanced from Pool Seven before beating Venezuela’s Eliecer Romero 15-9 and Germany’s Luis Bonah 15-12 in the preliminaries at the Ludovika Aréna.

That earned him a last-64 clash with Dershwitz, who as world number one is considered the man to beat in Hungary’s capital.

Second seed Gu Bon-gil of South Korea will begin his campaign against Georgia’s Beka Bazadze, who having progressed from Pool 29 defeated Russia’s Vasiliy Shirshov 15-11 and Kuwait’s Yousef Alshamlan 15-14 to clinch a place in the main draw.

The top 18-ranked fencers enter the competition at the last-64 stage.

Competition also got under way today at the FIE Women's Sabre World Cup in Sint-Niklaas in Belgium, where top seed Sofya Velikaya of Russia learned her last-64 opponent would be Georgia's Lika Jijieishvili.

First up for second seed Cécilia Berder of France is Hungary's Kata Varhelyi.

At the FIE Women's Epee World Cup in Chengdu, Germany's Beate Christmann set up a tie against the number one seed in the preliminary round, Magdalena Piekarska of Poland, following a victory over Australia's Dianna Gu.

The second seed in the preliminary round, Hungary's Eszter Muhari, will face Venezuela's Betyumil Posada.

Posada defeated Hong Kong's Chu Ka Mong 7-6 to progress.

The competition continues tomorrow.
