Hosts Argentina beat rivals Brazil to the women’s handball gold medal as action continued today at the South American Beach Games in Rosario.

Having defeated Venezuela 19-12, 22-7 in the semi-finals earlier in the day at the Red Stadium, the home nation won the final on a shootout.

Argentina took the first set 15-14 and although Brazil won the second 16-13, it was their opponents who prevailed 7-6 in the decider.

Victory comes five months after Argentina’s women’s team topped the podium at the Youth Olympic Games in the country’s capital, Buenos Aires.

"The union of this group identifies us as a team," said Argentina player Ivana Eliges.

"It gives us strength.

"We have fun and know each other a lot on and off the field.

"It is our essence – that which makes us overcome every obstacle that is presented to us to move forward and achieve the objectives."
