The memorandum of understanding aims to strengthen cooperation in promoting safe and healthy lifestyles, eliminate all forms of discrimination and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS through the educational and humanitarian heritage of the Games.

According to UNAIDS country manager for Belarus, Vera Ilyenkova, Minsk 2019 volunteers and specialists will be trained in HIV express testing and fan zones will allocate space for testing sites.

Contraceptives and leaflets will be distributed for free, with screens displaying video clips about the activities of the organisation. 

“I am confident that our partnership will contribute to the global effort to stop the AIDS epidemic by 2030," said Ilyenkova.

"We will cooperate with athletes and coaches so that the sports community could protect themselves and their loved ones from HIV infection, and also with fans. 

"Sports competitions are an excellent chance to reach out on the need for preventive measures,” she said, adding that this June marks 15 years since the similar memorandum was signed with the International Olympic Committee.

Minsk 2019 are also collaborating with the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, with the organisation hosting a two-day seminar for volunteers last month.

The Second European Games are taking place in the Belarusian capital from June 21 to 30.
