Ruslan Alekhno, a Belarusian pop singer and composer, has been named as the latest star ambassador of the 2019 European Games in Minsk.

Alekhno received a certificate to mark the recognition during his recent performance at the Minsk Concert Hall.

Having won the television contest People's Artist in 2004, he went on to represent Belarus in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, falling at the semi-final stage.

Seven years later, Alekhno was crowned winner of One to One! - a Russian talent show based on the Spanish series Your Face Sounds Familiar.

Other accolades he has received include the Order for Contribution to the Development of Russian Culture and the Medal of Francysk Skaryna, named after the Belarusian humanist, physician, translator and one of the first book printers in Eastern Europe.

The Minsk 2019 star ambassadors project aims to promote the upcoming multi-sport event in Belarus and abroad as well as attract attention to its ideas, drum up the interest of Belarusians and the international community, and popularise sports included on the programme.

The title is awarded to outstanding personalities in sport, art and culture, both from Belarus and other countries.

Last month, former Olympic fencing champion Alexander Romankov and the winner of the 2018 "Miss Belarus" beauty contest Maria Vasilevich were both named as star ambassadors.

Minsk 2019 is due to run from June 21 to 30.

The event is set to feature 15 sports and more than 4,000 athletes.
