Brendan Aqulina of Malta and Ireland's Gary Kelly have extended their winning runs to five on the second day of the men's competition at the Bowls World Cup in Barrack Heights.

Aquilina, who defeated Australia's home favourite Jeremy Henry on the opening day, added further victories on day two of competition at the Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club, defeating players from The Netherlands, Guernsey and Scotland to maintain his lead in the section two.

Kelly, in section one, remained the only other unbeaten player in the men's competition, also extending his winning run with wins over Norfolk Island and New Zealand.

Australia's Aaron Teys, Henry's Warilla clubmate - and New Zealand have four wins out of five so far - with each having lost to Kelly.

Malta's Connie Rixon, who won both of her opening matches in the women's section one, lost to Canada in straight sets, 5-6, 5-9, and the other unbeaten player in their section, representing  Malaysia, also succumbed to a first defeat, going down 11-2, 7-8, 3-4 to Fiji.

Canada’s Josephine Lee heads up the section with two wins from three.

Meanwhile in the women's section two, two of the five players that won their single opening matches on day one pushed on to remain unbeaten after a further two rounds.

Favourite Jo Edwards, of New Zealand, added victories over Israel and Japan, while South Africa beat Switzerland and Guernsey.
