The National Olympic Committee of Thailand will celebrate the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as part of their Olympic Day activities ©NOCT

A celebration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is to be held here by the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT) to mark Olympic Day on June 16, it has been announced.

ASEAN is a regional grouping that promotes economic, political and security cooperation among its 10 members: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

This year, with the chairmanship of ASEAN belonging to Thailand, the Royal Thai Government have proposed using Olympic Day to promote the theme "Advancing Partnership for Sustainability".

The launch of the event was held here to coincide with the Thai capital hosting the 38th Olympic Council of Asia General Assembly.

The NOCT, under the royal patronage of His Majesty the King and in cooperation with the Royal Thai Government, will present an ASEAN-themed Olympic Day to promote understanding and friendship within the region and beyond.

The NOCT claim it will be the first pan-ASEAN celebration to mark Olympic Day.

Olympic Day has been celebrated around the world on or around June 23 since 1987 to mark the formal establishment in 1894 of the International Olympic Committee by Pierre de Coubertin. 

More than 150 National Olympic Committees across the five rings hold events to promote the Olympic values and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
