Tunisia's Khaled Babbou has been elected as the new President of Rugby Africa at its 13th General Assembly in Marrakesh.

He replaces Morocco's Abdelaziz Bougja, who had stepped down after 17 years in the role.

Bougja was elected as the new Honorary President.

Babbou was elected unopposed following the late withdrawal of his only rival, Ghana’s Herbert Mensah.

Uganda's Andrew Owor was voted the vice-president, Ivory Coast's Tano Elvis the treasurer and South Africa's Jurie Roux secretary general.

A total of 27 countries - 26 of which were present with one voting by proxy - took part in the elections.

The members of the Executive Committee were also elected with Burkina Faso's Rolande Boro earning the most votes with 26.

Also elected were Zimbabwe's Aaron Jani, Zambia's Clement Sinkamba, Morocco's Herman M'Bonyo, Burundi's Paulina Lanco and Senegal's Guedel N'Diaye.

Egypt was also voted in as a full member of Rugby Africa with 25 votes.

"I’m very glad that the elections went on well and that most of the countries accepted our nominations and gave us the mandate to lead Rugby Africa for the next four years," Owor said.

"We think with our strategy we can work together with all the different members of Rugby Africa and we can accelerate the growth of the game on the continent."

Babbou congratulated Bougja and his team for their service, before closing the General Assembly with a new slogan: "In Africa, we remain united, efficient, all together!"
