The top three seeds in the women's tournament all progressed to the quarter-finals of the International Volleyball Federation Vizag Open as main draw action began in Visakhapatnam in India today.

Japan's Chiyo Suzuki and Yurika Sakaguchi, the Czech Republic's Martina Bonnerova and Martina Maixnerova and Austria's Nadine and Teresa Strauss each claimed two wins to book their places in the last eight.

The Japanese top seeds made light work of their first pool stage opponents as they easily dispatched Christie Dias and Steffi Fernandez of India 21-6, 21-5.

Suzuki and Sakaguchi then defeated Denmark’s Helle Sondergard and Simone Marie Okholm Hansen 21-17, 21-10 to finish top of Pool A.

In Pool B, Bonnerova and Maixnerova beat India's Anbazhagan Niranjana and Ramu Subraja 21-3, 21-8 and then overcame Sofia Starikov and Anita Dave of Israel 16-21, 21-15, 21-10.

The Austrian sister duo ousted American siblings Audrey and Nicole Nourse 21-13, 21-15 before they proved too strong for Satono Ishitsubo and Asami Shiba of Japan with a 22-20, 21-23, 16-14 success.

In the men's tournament, the top-seeded pair Arash Vakili and Bahman Salemiinjehbouroun of Iran battled to an 18-21, 21-15, 15-11 victory over India's Pralhad Dhawasker and Anil Shirobkar to avoid what would have been a huge upset.

Hitoshi Murakami and Takashi Tsuchiya of Japan joined the Iranian pair in winning their opening match as they beat the Czech Republic’s Martin Sramek and Dominic Samec 19-21, 29-27, 15-13.

The tournament, part of the FIVB Beach World Tour, continues tomorrow.
