According to Federation of University Sports of China, the athletes have been selected from universities around China and will participate in 37 events in eight sports in the Russian city. 

"We have two goals in this Winter Universiade," Xue Yanqing, the Chef de Mission of the Chinese delegation, was reported as saying by China's official state news agency Xinhua.

"The first one is to win more medals.

"We also hope our student athletes to establish a better communication with their foreign peers."

China, hosts of the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin, where they won 48 medals, including 18 gold, will be competing at the event for the seventh time.

At the last Winter Universiade in Almaty two years ago, China finished sixth overall with 10 medals, four of them gold. 

Krasnoyarsk is due to stage the 29th edition of the Winter Universiade from March 2 to 12.

International University Sports Federation (FISU) President Oleg Matytsin has expressed confidence in the Organising Committee prior to the event and suggested Krasnoyarsk 2019 will leave a strong legacy.

He claimed that FISU has had a strong relationship with organisers since the Winter Universiade was awarded to Krasnoyarsk back in 2013.

The Russian also said that the event would not only benefit athletes, but the host city and region.
