They were not among the entries for the event in Sochi on Saturday and Sunday (February 23 and 24), Russian Luge Federation executive director Stanislav Tyurin announced.

"At the World Cup stage in Sochi, lugers from 14 countries will perform," Tyurin told Russia's official state news agency TASS. 

"The deadline for submitting applications expired on February 15. 

"Ukraine’s teams are not among the tournament participants. 

"In total, about 115 athletes and coaches will receive accreditation."

It is the latest example of Ukraine refusing to participate in an event in Russia.

Last month it was revealed that their athletes will miss the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk next month.

Ukraine's Government last March banned the country's athletes from competing at any events in Russia in protest of their neighbour's annexation of Crimea in 2014.

They also claimed it was because of the doping scandal involving Russia's athletes.

The Government in Kyiv later scaled this back to recommending athletes do not compete in Russia and warning them, that if they decide to do so, then their trip will not be funded.

The absence of Ukraine, however, is unlikely to affect the quality of the competition in Sochi. 

Although regular competitors in the FIL World Cup, they rarely make any impression.

At the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang last year, their sliders finished last in the men’s singles, the women's singles, the men's doubles and the team relay.
