United States’ Alison Riske and Jennifer Brady sprung surprises in the first round of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Riske faced the challenge of 13th seed Julia Goerges in her opening match in the main draw at the Women's Tennis Association Premier 5 event at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre in Dubai.

The American earned a crucial break of serve in the opening set, which she eventually claimed 6-4.

She completed a straight sets victory by taking the second 7-5.

Her reward will be a second round meeting with France’s Alize Cornet.

Brady, who came through qualification, earned an impressive win over Latvia’s Jeļena Ostapenko.

Having claimed the opening set 6-4, Brady took full command of the match and won the second 6-0 against Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion.

Brady will face the winners of the match between France’s Caroline Garcia and Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round.

Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro enjoyed a comfortably victory in her match against Babora Strycova, as she overcame the Czech player 6-1, 6-3.

Navarro will play China’s Zhang Shaui in her second round tie.

Competition is set to continued tomorrow in the United Arab Emirates city.

World number one Naomi Osaka is among the top seeds who are due to enter the event in the second round.

The Japanese star, the reigning Australian and US Open champion, will play Kristina Mladenovic of France
