Reigning champions and hosts Denmark will play Germany in the final of the European Mixed Team Badminton Championships after both sides advanced through their semi-finals today.

Playing at the Frederiksberg Hallerne in Copenhagen, Germany came up against the 2018 runners up Russia in their last four tie and were undoubtedly the underdogs, having lost 5-0 to them in the group stage.

Playing like a different side, though, the Germans put that result behind them and overcame the odds to win 3-1.

With the mixed doubles match going ahead first Isabel Herttrich and Mark Lamsfuss beat Ekaterina Bolotova and Vladimir Ivanov 22-20, 21-10 to put Germany 1-0 up.

Vladimir Malkov then drew Russia level by beating Kai Schaefer 21-13, 14-21, 21-16 in the men’s singles, but Germany went ahead again when Yvonne Li beat Evgeniya Kosetskaya 17-21, 21-16, 21-17 in the women’s singles.

Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel then came out for the men’s doubles knowing a win would put their country in the final, but if they felt the pressure it did not show, as they took the win 21-14, 21-19 against Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov.

With the result already sealed, both sides agreed not to play the last women’s doubles tie.

"It is an amazing feeling to reach the final," Lamsfuss said.

"We are so happy to beat Russia today and England yesterday,"

Seidel added: "We believed in ourselves,

"When we play our best, we can beat everybody,"

In the other semi-final there was no such shock, as Denmark triumphed 3-0 against The Netherlands.

It means they head into the final having only lost two of 17 matches so far in the Championships.
