Romania's Simona Halep and Belgium's Elise Mertens are set to meet in the final of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Qatar Open after winning their respective semi-finals today.

Halep, the top seed in the competition, defeated Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in her semi-final of this WTA Premier tournament at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha.

Halep won the first set 6-3, but Svitolina fought back to triumph in the second set with the same score.

The Romanian prevailed, however, beating Svitolina 6-4 in the final set to progress to tomorrow's final.

This was the first time in nearly two years that Halep had beaten her Ukrainian opponent.

"She played amazing," said Halep.

"She moved very well and she hit the ball strong."

Halep added: "She didn't miss much.

"So I think was a very high level of tennis today, and I'm really proud that I could win the match against her."

Halep is now scheduled to Mertens, who secured a surprise victory over the tournament's third seed, Germany's Angelique Kerber.

The match followed the same pattern as Halep's, with Mertens winning the first set 6-4 before Kerber came back with a 6-2 victory in the second set.

This proved to be futile for Kerber, with Mertens dominating the third set and triumphing 6-1.

The final are due to take place in Doha tomorrow.
