Three gold medals helped Sweden end the 2019 European Ski Orienteering Championships (ESOC) in Turkey as the most successful nation.

With four silvers and three bronze medals as well as their golds, Sweden finished the Championships in Sarikamiş with 20 points, three in front of Russia.

Russia also won three gold medals, but only three silvers and two bronzes to finish second overall on 17 points.

Two of Sweden's gold medals came in the middle-distance races through Magdalena Olsson and Erik Rost, while the third was won over the long distance by Tove Alexandersson.

Only one of Russia’s golds came from the individual events, where Alena Trapeznikova won the women's sprint.

Norway's Lars Moholdt was the Championships' most successful athlete, winning both the men's sprint and long distance races as well as the men's relay.

He also won two silver medals in the middle distance race and sprint relay.

Olsson, who won the women's middle distance race for Sweden, described the Championships as "the best ESOC I have experienced in recent years".

The International Orienteering Federation has struggled to find hosts for several major upcoming competitions including the World Ski Orienteering Championships, European Youth Ski Orienteering Championships and World Masters Ski Orienteering Championships, all of which are due to go ahead in 2020.
