World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue has praised China's decision to further integrate the sport into its school system.

Taekwondo is one of 18 sports that will be used to test the skill level of China's high, middle and primary school students.

It is part of a Ministry of Education drive to improve fitness levels and encourage more young people to regularly exercise.

Taekwondo was already a compulsory sport in some high school entrance exams as well as an optional activity for some students taking college degrees.

The Ministry of Education has reportedly cited the "many advantages" of taekwondo, including etiquette training, psychological training, physical training and skill training.

Authorities also believe it is safe to practice while the lack of a requirement for special clothing and equipment is seen as another plus.

More than 100 experts from across China gathered at Beijing University to test sports for the country's curriculum.

Taekwondo featured alongside others such as athletics, swimming, basketball, volleyball, and football.

"I am happy to learn that these positive benefits have been recognised by Chinese educational authorities," said Choue.

China has emerged as one of the sport's powerhouses, winning four medals at the last World Championships in Muju in South Korea in 2017 and two golds at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Wuxi has become a hub for the sport, hosting the Grand Slam Champions Series and becoming a home to a centre dedicated to taekwondo education.
