Figure skaters Nathan Chen and Alysa Liu scooped the respective men's and women's prizes in the United States Olympic Committee's Best of January awards.

The duo were recognised for their displays at the US Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, while the men's pursuit track cycling line-up claimed the team award.

Chen, the reigning world champion, won the American crown for the third year in a row and broke his own scoring records in the process.

The Four Continents and two-time Grand Prix Final gold medallist registered an overall score of 342.22 points as he was awarded 113.42 for his short programme and 228.80 for the free skate.

He won in Detroit by 58.21 points, setting a record for the largest margin of victory, with his performance including six quad jumps.

Liu won the women's event in Detroit at the age of just 13, becoming the youngest-ever champion.

She was second after the short programme but became the first American woman to land two triple Axels in a single display in the free to take top spot.

After landing another Axel in the short, Liu became just the second woman in the world to pull-off three in a single competition.

The track cycling team of Ashton Lambie, Colby Lange and Danny Summerhill were second in the team pursuit at the International Cycling Union World Cup in Hong Kong.

This was the best American finish in the discipline for more than a decade.

USOC presents men's, women's and team awards each month.

Shortlists for each category are drawn up before national governing body members, members of the media and fans vote for their picks.
