The reigning world indoor champion finished in 3min 35.57sec at the Torun Arena to win ahead of the hosts’' Marcin Lewandowski who ran 3:36.50, and Sweden's Kalle Berglund who managed 3:36.63.

Tefera, who is just 19-years-old, took the lead with 300m to go and was never threatened, cruising to victory.

"I felt very strong," he said.

"It was a very good race.

"The opening was a little slow.

"I expected faster."

An equal world lead came elsewhere on the track in the men's 60m hurdles, where Spain's Orlando Ortega won in 7.49, ahead of Milan Trajkovic from Cyprus and Jarret Eaton from the United States, while another Ethiopian Habitam Alemu won a very tight women's 800m against Great Britain’s European 1500m champion Laura Muir.

A time of 1:59.50 was enough for Habitam to win, by just one-hundredth of a second.

Poland's Sofia Ennaoui came third another nine 10ths of a second behind.

In the field the reigning world indoor men's long jump champion Juan Miguel Echevarria bounced back from a tight loss at the last Indoor Tour event in Karlsruhe in Germany to win tonight with a meeting record of 8.12 metres.

The 20-year-old Cuban was the only athlete in the field to break the 8m mark, as Sweden's Thobias Nilsson Montler came second with 7.97m and Poland's Tomasz Jaszcuk was third with 7.87m.

In other notable results the hosts got a win in the women's 60m where Ewa Swoboda triumphed in 7.15, while in the men’s 400m the Czech Republic’s Pavel Maslak set the fastest time across two heats at 46.19.
