Alex Granato from the United States gained his first victory on the International Equestrian Federation Jumping World Cup circuit in Wellington, at the same Florida venue where he made his debut a year ago.

Riding Carlchen W, Granato finished top of a nine horse jump-off to claim victory at Deeridge Farms in a time of 42.70sec, nearly a second in front of Canada's Mario Deslauriers riding Bardolina.

Switzerland's Beat Mandli finished third atop Dsarie, in 44.16.

"It's all very surreal," Granato said.

"It's been an amazing week.

"It's a privilege to ride at a venue like this, against riders like this that I've looked up to for a long time."

Granato has had Carlchen W for five years and was full of praise for his horse afterwards.

"He's a naturally fast horse, so I got to play that to my advantage and let him run at his pace and stay focused on my track and turns," he said.

"We got a bit lucky with a rub in the jump-off, but my horse is very fresh and we were gearing him toward this week."

Reigning Jumping World Cup Finals champion Beezie Madden finished fifth, which was enough to see her take over the lead in the North American East Coast League standings on 58 points.

That puts her three ahead of another US rider Molly Ashe Cawley, who has 55, while Germany's Wilhelm Genn is third on 47.

Richard Spooner leads the West Coast standings on 49 points.
