Chile roared to triple gold today at the World Para Powerlifting Americas Open Championships in Bogota.

Juan Carlos Garrido, Jorge Carinao and Camila Campos all climbed to the top of the podium in the Colombian capital while also earning Chilean quota places for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Two sets of medals were awarded - the top three overall and the top three from the Americas -  with athletes from outside of the region invited to compete.

Garrido, the reigning Parapan American Games champion, claimed overall and Americas honours in the men's under-59 kilograms event at the Hotel Sheraton.

He hoisted up 177kg to clinch a comfortable victory.

China's Qi Yongkai managed 160kg for overall silver as Colombia's Omar Garcia Correa won overall bronze and Americas silver on 133kg.

Peru's Neil Garcia Trelles registered 132kg for Americas bronze, the first major international medal for the country which will host the Parapan American Games in Lima next year.

"I want to thank God for helping me finish the year this way, with gold," said Garrido.

"Thank you to all for their support, especially to my daughter Ivanna Belen."

In the men's under-65kg, all of the top three in the overall rankings came from the Americas.

Carino gave Chile their second title after lifting up 175kg with his final attempt.

Herbert Aceituno managed the same mark for El Salvador but his heavier bodyweight meant he was forced to settle for silver, with Colombian Bryan Balanta Barona taking bronze on 156kg.

Campos won the Americas crown in the women's under-55kg competition with a 106kg lift.

This was only enough for second overall, however, as China's Xiao Cuijuan managed the best mark of the day with 113kg.

Miriam Aguilar Jimenez won Americas silver and overall bronze on 92kg as regional bronze went to Brazil's Rene Silva Souza on 82kg.

Mexico's three-time Paralympic champion Amalia Perez was among others to star in Bogota.

She set an Americas record of 134kg as she won the overall and continental titles in the women's under-61kg class.

Perez has not lost a major international competition since 2013.

Brazilians finished second and third overall to also seal regional medals of the same colour.

Terezinha Santos recorded 87kg with Naira Gomes on 86kg to complete the podium.

Brazil also won two gold medals of their own on a good day for the country.

Mariana D'Andrea won the overall and Americas title in the women's under-67kg, lifting a best of 116kg.

Two Colombians followed her onto both podiums - Bertha Fernandez Arango who managed 97kg and Ana Pinto Ochoa who lifted 78kg.

Maria De Oliveira won the Americas title in the women's under-50kg with her mark of 86kg.

This was only enough for bronze overall, as the top title was clinched by Spain's Loida Zabala Ollero on 95kg with Indian Sakina Khatun second on 89kg.

Colombia's Nohemi Carabali clinched Americas silver on 85kg with Venezuela's Wiunawis Hernandez third in the region on 84kg.

Competition continues tomorrow.
