Spain were crowned winners of the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup as they secured a 2-1 win over Mexico in the final in Uruguay.

The Spanish team took the lead in the opening stages of the first half at the Estadio Charrúa, with Maria Mendez and Salma Paralluelo combining.

Their efforts set up a chance for Claudia Pina, who produced a composed finish.

Pina doubled her tally in the 26th minute, as she delivered a first time finish from Eva Navarro’s cutback in the box.

The effort saw her join Ghana’s Mukarama Abdulai as the top scorer in the tournament with seven goals.

Mexican hopes were reignited just three minutes after Pina’s strike when Denise Castro headed in a corner from their captain Nicole Perez.

The crowd, which included FIFA President Gianni Infantino, watched Mexico attempt to level the scores throughout the duration of the second half.

Spain preserved their narrow advantage to win their first Women’s World Cup title at any age group.

The victory ended a string of near misses at the Under-17 event, which included being the runners-up in 2014 and third place finishes in 2010 and 2016.

New Zealand finished third as they overcame Canada 2-1 in a playoff.

The tie, which took place prior to the final, began in stunning fashion with the fastest goal in the history of the tournament.

Canada’s goalkeeper Anna Karpenko was robbed off possession by Maggie Jenkins, which allowed Grace Wisnewski to tap in after just 15 seconds.

Wisnewski doubled her tally in the 13th minute with a looping strike, before hitting the post in the second half to miss out on a hat-trick.

Lara Kazandjian gave Canada hope with a superb long range finish in the 64th minute, but they ultimately ran out of time as New Zealand held on.
