Austrian Wolfgang Kindl set a track record on his way to sealing gold in the men's singles event as Toni Eggert of Germany completed a remarkable comeback from a broken leg with victory in the doubles at the Luge World Cup in Whistler.

Double world champion Kindl clocked a combined 1min 39.774sec to secure victory at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

The second run of 49.837sec by the 30-year-old broke the track record, which had previously stood at 50.109 set in December 2016.

Olympic silver medallist Felix Loch of Germany took the silver medal, 0.099 seconds adrift of Kindl.

Reinhard Egger added to the Austrian haul by finishing in third place for the bronze medal.

Kindl claimed "everything was perfect" following his victory, which saw the Austrian team build on their success at their home World Cup in Innsbruck last weekend.

Eggert, who broke his leg in a training accident just seven weeks ago, had earlier triumphed in the doubles event with partner Sascha Benecken.

The duo finished in an overall time of 1min 16.691sec to lead a German clean sweep as competitors from the nation also took silver and bronze medals.

Robin Johannes Gueke and David Gamm were second and Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt - whose 38.292 in their second run was a track record - did enough for third.

The event is due to continue tomorrow with the women's singles and team relay events.
