The competition, taking place in the Polish town of Wisla, is the first in a season of 33 men's World Cup events at 18 different venues.

Klimov topped qualifying after scoring 137.7 points, beating home favourite David Kubacki to the top spot after the Pole scored 136.3 points. 

The Russian jumped 137 metres to top the pile with Kubacki on 128m.

Stephen Leyhe of Germany qualified in third with 135.2 points, leaping 133m.

Defending champion and competition favourite Kamil Stoch of Poland did not live up to expectations, just qualifying in 48th position out of 50 with 105.7 points. 

Tomorrow will see the team event, while Sunday (November 18) will host the individual final.
