Defending champions China won their first match of the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships in Canada ©Badminton Pan Am

Defending champions China beat Germany 5-0 on the opening day of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Junior Mixed Team Championships in Markham in Canada. 

The Championships, taking place at the Pan Am Centre, feature nine groups of four teams.

Each team consists of a male and female singles player, a female doubles pair, a male doubles pair and a mixed doubles pair. 

China defeated Germany in Group A1 as Li Shifeng beat Lukas Resch 21-11, 21-15 and Wang Zhiyi won 21-11, 21-8 against Ann-Kathrin Spori. 

Guo Xinwa and Liu Xuanxuan defeated Leona Michalski and Aaron Sonnenschein 21-5, 21-7 and Di Zijian and Wang Chang beat Brian Holtschke and Matthias Kicklitz.

The whitewash was complete when Liu Xuanxuan and Xia Yuting beat Emma Moszczynski and Jule Petrikowski 21-7, 21-7.

Hosts Canada won all five of their matches against Ukraine in Group B.

Canada's Brian Yang beat Ukraine's Danylo Bosniuk 21-14, 15-21, 21-11 and Talia Ng won against Valeriya Rudakova 21-18, 21-6 to take the score to 2-0.

Stanley Feng and Kevin Wang then defeated Glib Beketov and Mykhaylo Makhnovskiy 21-17, 21-17, before Catherine Choi and Crystal Lai beat Anastasiya Prozorova and Valeriya Rudakova 21-12, 21-11. 

Katie Ho-Shue and Brian Yang made the final score 5-0 by triumphing against Mykhaylo Makhnovskiy and Anastasiya Prozorova 21-12, 21-9. 

Canada then lost to Malaysia 4-1, however.

The only closely contested matches were between the Czech Republic and Spain in Group F and Mexico and Austria in Group H, both ending at 3-2.
