Germany won the Challenge Cup competition as the International Equestrian Federation's Jumping Nations Cup Final continued in Barcelona.

Eight teams made it through to compete for the overall title tomorrow during yesterday's opening qualifying round.

It left the seven countries who failed to advance having to make do with a tilt at the secondary prize of the Challenge Cup today.

Germany came out on top at the Real Club de Polo, the Barcelona 1992 Olympic course.

They ended with just five penalty points as Marcus Ehning and Phillipp Weishaupt both went clear.

Maurice Tebbel collected the five points which were the only ones to count as Hans-Dieter Dreher's tally of nine was discarded.

United States finished second with nine penalty points as Alex Granato went clear.

The Americans won the team jumping gold at their home World Equestrian Games in Tryon last month but missed the main final here.

Brazil were third today on 10 penalty points.
