The Bina Foundation has hosted Nigeria’s first blind football league tournament and training camps for both men and women in Enugu.

Bina reported that 115 men and women competed in the tournament and took part in the training camps held prior to the event kicking-off.

The training camps and tournaments were hosted at the Union Secondary School and focused on ball control, orientation, communication, dribbling and shooting to prepare all the players for the inaugural tournament.

Five clubs from five different Nigerian states competed in the men’s event; Lions Blind FC from Enugu, All Stars Blind FC from Anambra, Stallions Blind FC from Imo, Golden Blind Boys FC from Ebonyi and Tigers Blind FC from Abi.

The round-robin tournament crowned Lions Blind FC the champions, with eight points and a three goal difference advantage.

In the women’s event, two teams - Diamond Ladies FC of Anambra and Sunshine Ladies FC of Enugu state – played each other twice to decide the tournament’s winner.

Diamond Ladies FC took the trophy home after scoring in the second match for the victory.

Following the success of this tournament and the establishment of blind football teams across the nation, the Bina Foundation’s next step is to look to form a national team.

The aspiration is to form Nigerian blind football national teams for both genders and compete on the international stage at tournaments and International Blind Sports Federation competitions.

"The aim of the summer camp was to plant seeds today to jump-start the formation of our national blind football team in Nigeria," said Bina Foundation founder and President Lady Ifeoma.

"We have officially joined other African blind football countries like Cameroon, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Mali, Egypt, Cape Verde, Ghana, and Zimbabwe.

"It is our sincere hope that in the near future Nigeria will be able to participate in international tournaments."
