Wang Qiang, who became the first Chinese woman to reach the quarter-finals of her home Women's Tennis Association Wuhan Open, made a little more history today as she reached the semi-finals thanks to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Monica Puig of Puerto Rico.

The 67-minute win over the Olympic champion was the latest in 14 straight WTA wins for Wang on home soil.

She broke her opponent’s serve six times in the match at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center.

"This is the first time that I entered the semi-finals at a Premier 5 event, so I’m really happy today,” said Wang, who is world-ranked 34.

Wang will now face Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit in the final four, with the other semi-final featuring the only remaining seed, Ashleigh Barty of Australia - and the 16th seed at that - and Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.

Barty had progressed with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, while Sabalenka defeated Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 7-5, 6-3, who had earlier defeated the world number one Simona Halep of Romania.

Kontaveit won her quarter-final against China's Shuai Zhang, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
