Competition at the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Weightlifting Championships in Biala Podlaska, Poland began today.

In the women's 48kg, Rira Suzuki of Japan ranked first with a total point score of 161. 

American Veronica Restrepo came second with 157 points, and Iramina Rie of Japan came third with 144 points. 

In the men's 56kg, Japan's Hayato Chinen proved triumphant with 229 points, compatriot Kaito Kubo came second with 225 points and Korea's Seunghwan came third with 224 points.

The men's 62kg saw Hiroyuki of Japan win with 259 points and Nien-En Chiang with 253 points.

Mexico's Susana Paola Fuentes Zavala ranked first with 172 points in the women's 53kg event.

American Megan Kay Grantom came second with 168 points and Garance Rigaud of France finished third with 166 points.

Tomorrow will see the women's 58kg, men's 69kg, women's 63kg and the men's 77kg.

140 athletes are to participate in the competition, taking place at the Józef Piłsudsk Unviersity of Physical Education.
