Stephane Houdet, Yui Kamiji and David Wagner will all defend their respective titles at the 11th edition of the US Open wheelchair tennis tournament starting tomorrow in New York.

Frenchman Houdet, the defending men’s singles champion, faces stiff competition from Japan’s Shingo Kunieda, who has won six US Open crowns since the tournament’s conception in 2007.

Kunieda, the world number one, arrives in the US having finished as was runner up to Britain’s Alfie Hewett at last week’s United States Tennis Association Championships Super Series in St. Louis.

Hewett made the US Open final last year and will join Houdet’s challengers, also expected to include 2010 US Open finalist Nicolas Peifer of France and Sweden's two-time Wimbledon champion Stefan Olsson.

Eight women will compete in the women’s singles event, including the top five ranked players in the world.

World number one Diede de Groot of the Netherlands has won two of the three earlier Grand Slams this year, winning her first Australian Open title and defending her Wimbledon crown.

Japan's defending US Open champion and world number two, Yui Kamiji, will look to add to her Roland Garros title this year with victory at Flushing Meadows.

Dutch player Aniek van Koot, current world number three and 2013 US Open champion, is among the other contenders.

Van Koot won last week’s Super Series event with wins over de Groot and Kamiji so will hope to continue that momentum.

Former Grand Slam singles champions Sabine Ellerbrock of Germany and Marjolein Buis of the Netherlands complete the world’s top five and could also challenge.

In the quad single’s event, the top three men’s players in the world will all be participating and have all previously won the event.

Reigning champion Wagner of the United States will face world number two and three Dylan Alcott and Andy Lapothorne in the defence of his title.

Britain's Lapothorne won the 2014 US Open title with Australian Alcott winning the following year.

American world number seven Bryan Barten completes the four-man line-up and will compete in a round-robin tournament, with the top two players then contesting the final.

The tournament starts tomorrow.
