Nigeria and Egypt will clash for the gold medal in the men's and women's team events at the African Table Tennis Championships after winning their respective semi-finals in Mauritius today.

The Nigerian men's side swept aside Algeria 3-0 to book a place in tomorrow's final at the Beau Bassin Sports Complex.

Egypt reached the showpiece contest in the men's team event by defeating Togo by the same scoreline.

Mohammed El-Beiali, an 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 victor over Togo's Mawussi Agbetogolo, insisted the Egyptian team can overcome Nigeria in the final despite the absence of talisman Omar Assar.

"We are surely ready for Nigeria and we can surprise them in the match," he said.

"But we will not underestimate the quality of Nigeria."

In the women's event, Egypt eased to a 3-0 win over Algeria and Nigeria also registered a whitewash against South Africa.

A “Table Tennis for All, For Life” forum, attended by International Table Tennis Federation President Thomas Weikert, took place alongside the first two days of the tournament in Mauritius.

The meeting, which concluded today, followed the Opening Ceremony, where Weikert promised the worldwide governing body was "ready" to support Africa in the development of the sport.

"This is part of our strategic plan to empower each continent," he said.

"We will increase our backing for the continent in terms of equipment and coaching, which we believe we help raise the profile of the sport.

"However, we must not forget the ethics of good governance and transparency which must also be upheld by those in charge of our sport in every continent."
