Canada's taekwondo cousins, Skylar and Andrew Park, have reflected upon the experience they gained in Moscow as they competed in the second World Taekwondo Grand Prix event of the season.

The two Winnipeg residents were the lone Canadians at the event, and Skylar was coming off her first career Grand Prix medal success having taken bronze at the opening edition.

As seventh-seed in the women's 57 kilogram division, the 19-year-old won her opening-round match against China's Yun-wen Huang 12-10 before losing in the round-of-16 to China’s Lijun Zhou.

The 10th-ranked athlete then came out on top 15-7 in a division that went ultimately to Turkey's Irem Yaman.

Skylar’s 24-year-old cousin, Andrew, was entered into his first Grand Prix event, competing in the men's 80kg class.

The 28th seed drew a strong fighter from South Korea, fifth-ranked Hun Kim, in the round-of-32, losing 18-10.

"Obviously we were hoping for better results, but I feel I performed well for my first Grand Prix and I felt I belonged in that ring," he said.

“I felt I performed better, but that will come in time when I get more comfortable and gain more experience fighting at the Grand Prix level."

The men’s 80kg class was won ultimately by Russia’s Maksim Khramtcov.
