Italy stunned hosts Russia to clinch the team gold medal as all-around world champion Dina Averina was beaten in the individual competition at the International Gymnastics Federation World Challenge Cup in Kazan.

The Italian squad, comprised of Alessia Maurelli, Martina Centofanti, Agnese Duranti, Martina Santandrea, Anna Basta and Letizia Cicconcell, edged their Russian opponents in a closely-contested all-around competition at the Gymnastics Centre.

Italy and Russia both scored 43.950 points, with the Italian team awarded victory by virtue of their higher execution total.

The bronze medal was claimed by Bulgaria, who posted an overall score of 43.650 points.

In the individual all-around event, Russian Aleksandra Soldatova enjoyed a rare triumph over 2017 world champion and compatriot Averina to take the gold medal.

Soldatova's routines across the apparatus yielded 80.400, the same total managed by Averina, who lost out on the European all-around title to sister Arina earlier this year.

Soldatova was declared the winner by virtue of her better execution score, condemning Averina to silver.

Israel's Linoy Ashram, who set a world record score during the last event on the circuit in Minsk, did enough for bronze on 78.800.

The World Challenge Cup in Kazan concludes tomorrow with apparatus finals, bringing the campaign to a close.
