Puerto Rican teenager Adriana Diaz stunned sixth seed Sofia Polcanova of Austria to reach the second round of the women's singles main draw at the International Table Tennis Federation Czech Open in Olomouc.

Diaz, who claimed gold medals at the recent Central American and Caribbean Games and the Pan American Junior Championships, recorded a superb 11-6, 11-9, 7-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7 victory at the OMEGA Sports and Health Centre.

The 17-year-old had to come through the qualification round but produced a performance beyond her years to progress to the next round.

Diaz was joined by Japan's top seed Kasumi Ishikawa, who overcame Germany's Kristin Lang 11-9, 11-6, 11-4, 9-11, 6-11, 11-7.

Ishikawa's compatriot Miu Hirano, the third seed, is also through after she beat Mizuki Morizono 11-7, 11-6, 6-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-5.

There will be no repeat of past glories for Monaco's Yang Xiaoxin, who this year had been required to compete in the qualification event, after the 2016 winner was beaten by Swedish 10th seed Matilda Ekholm 11-6, 14-12, 11-6, 11-5.

In the men's draw, top seed Dimitrij Ovtcharov booked his second round place with a 11-7, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6 win against Japan's Taku Takakiwa.

The German player is hoping to end his torrid run of form on the World Tour circuit as he has failed to progress beyond the second round in his last four tournaments.

England's Liam Pitchford, who sprung a huge surprise at the Bulgaria Open last week when he beat China's Olympic champion Ma Long, was among the other winners as he ousted Kristian Karlsson of Sweden 9-11, 11-9, 11-3, 11-8, 11-4.

The tournament in the Czech city is due to continue tomorrow.
