The 23-year-old Valencia, who competed at the London 2012 Olympic Games as a 17-year-old and lost the bronze medal match at Rio 2016, won world silver with Mexico at their home Championships last year.

If the women’s recurve final was close, the men’s compound final was even close as Mexico’s Antonio Hidalgo and Bri

Bridger Deaton of the US both scored 10 in a shoot-out after finishing at 141-141, with Hidalgo taking gold after his shot had been adjudged millimetres closer to the centre after being measured with calipers.

In the women’s compound event, world number two Sarah Lopez earned a home gold as she defeated fellow Colombian Nora Valdez 148-142.

Athletes competing at the event in the Colombian city had the first chance to qualify for next year's Pan American Games in Lima.

The Pan American Championships wa a key event on the path to Lima 2019 as it is one of only two qualifying competitions for next year's Pan American Games.
