World number one Rafael Nadal overcame birthday boy Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece to claim victory at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Tsitsipas, who turned 20 today, had proved the story of the tournament as the unseeded player claimed four consecutive wins over top-10 opposition.

He had followed up wins over Austria's Dominic Thiem, Serbia's Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic and Germany's defending champion Alexander Zverev by beating South Africa’s Kevin Anderson yesterday.

These efforts appeared to have taken their toll on the Greek player who was broken in the third game of the final on the Aviva Centre's hard courts.

Nadal broke again shortly after to comfortably take the opening set 6-2, with Tsitsipas unable to make an impression on the Spaniard's serve.

A straightforward success appeared on the cards when Nadal broke in the second, but Tsitsipas capitalised on a loose service game when the world number one served for the title.

Tsitsipas, who became the first unseeded finalist at the Canadian event since Germany's Nicolas Kiefer in 2008, would force a set point on Nadal's serve.

He proved unable to take the match into a decider, as the 20-year-old’s impressive tournament came to an end when Nadal sealed a 6-2, 7-6 win to take the title at the Association of Tennis Professionals Masters 1000 event.

Both of this year's French Open champions would secure Rogers Cup titles, as Simona Halep battled past Sloane Stephens in the women's final in Montreal.

The two players broke each other's serve on three occasions in the opening set, which Halep eventually took on a tie-break in the IGA Stadium.

Stephens responded in impressive fashion, with the American securing the second set 6-3 to set up a decider.

A closely fought match would eventually go in favour of the 2016 champion Halep, who held her nerve to triumph 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.

The 2018 Western and Southern Open continues the season tomorrow in Cincinnati.
