England have thrashed Mexico 6-1 at the FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup to finish top of Group B in Saint Malo.

The first half at the Stade de Marville was fairly balanced and it was actually the central American’s that took the lead, when Jacqueline Ovalle scored her fourth goal of the tournament in the 37th minute.

At half time the score remained 1-0 to Mexico, but a sensational second half from England saw them turn the game around in some style.

Alessia Russo levelled the match in the 49th minute before Chloe Kelly put England in the lead four minutes later.

Lauren Hemp then slotted the first of her three goals after 62 minutes before Georgia Stanway made it four.

Two more goals from Hemp then sealed the win and confirmed England’s quarter-final spot, while defeat for the Mexicans means they are now out.

Elsewhere in Group B today, the reigning champions North Korea beat Brazil 2-1 to confirm their own spot in the next round.

Goals from Son Sun-Im and Choe Kum-Ok sealed the win for them, largely against the run of play.

The win means they finish second on the group on six points from three games, one point behind England.

Brazil meanwhile crash out in last place, with only one point from their three matches.

In Group A, the only other group to see action today, France saw off the Netherlands 4-0 and Ghana edged out New Zealand 1-0.

The France result means the hosts leapfrog the Netherlands into first place with seven points and will qualify for the finals as group winners.

The Netherlands’ place in the next round was already confirmed before today’s match, but in losing today they will now find themselves playing a tougher opponent in the last eight.

A first half hattrick from Delabre all but sealed the win for France, but the hosts did not stop there and added another, thanks to Laurent, in the 72nd minute.

New Zealand’s loss meanwhile means they finish the group in last place, while Ghana’s win acts as a mere consolation for them, as the three points are not enough to see them through.

Groups C and D will be completed tomorrow, with three teams from each group still in with a chance of making the last eight.
