Caterine Ibargüen and Eider Arevalo delighted the home crowd with dominant athletics victories for Colombia at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla.

Ibargüen, the two-time world and reigning Olympic champion, dominated the competition to win with a best leap of 14.92 metres, a Championship record, at the Rafael Cotes stadium

Team-mate Yosiri Urritia was second with 14.48m.

Cuba's Liadegmis Povea took bronze with 14.44m.

Venezuela's Yulimar Rojas, who beat Ibargüen to gold at last year's International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in London, did not compete.

"Thank you Barranquilla. I am very proud of being Colombian and to contribute to my country in the Games," Ibarguen told an elated crowd after a victory lap.

The 34-year-old became only the second woman in the history of the Central American and Caribbean Games to take the long jump and triple jump double.

She has also now won eight medals in five editions to become the most decorated Colombian athlete in the event's history.

Reigning world 20 kilometres race walking champion Eider Arevalo also claimed a home victory in 1 hour 26min 42sec.

Manuel Soto completed another Colombian 1-2 in 1:25.59, while Erick Barrondo of Guatemala was another 18 seconds back in third.

Bernardo Baloyes also claimed Colombian gold in the 200 metres.

He clocked 20.13sec to beat Panama's Alonso Edward and Trinidad and Tobago's Kyle Greaux, second and third respectively after each clocking 20.17.

Rosemary Almanza of Cuba also completed the 800 and 1500m double by triumphing over the longer distance in 4min 22.14sec.

Angelín Figueroa took the silver medal for Puerto Rico in 4:22.52 and Rosibel García gained a Colombian bronze in 4:23.43.

There was some rare host nation disappointment as 5,000m gold medallist and 1500m defending champion Muriel Cuneo faded to fifth after leading with 300m to go.

Cuba claimed gold in men's handball elsewhere today with a 29-18 success of Panama at the Coliseo Colegio Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Barranquilla.

Mexico claimed a thrilling 33-32 bronze medal match win over Dominican Republic.

Puerto Rico also edged Dominican Republic 75-74 in the men's basketball semi-finals while Colombia were more comfortable in a 78-69 win over Cuba.

Mexico remain top of the medals table with 121 golds, 101 silver and 76 bronze.

Cuba lie second with 81 gold, 64 silver and 60 bronze while Colombia are third with 65 gold, 82 silver and 84 bronze.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow with the final day of action scheduled for Friday (August 3).
