Former under-81 kilogram world champion Avtandili Tchrikishvili from Georgia won his first Grand Prix title in the under-90kg class today at the International Judo Federation Zagreb Grand Prix in Croatia.

In his sixth competition in the new weight division, Tchrikishvili won all six of his contests to win his first medal of any kind since 2016, beating former world champion Asley Gonzalez from Cuba in the final.

The first bronze medal at Zagreb Arena was won by Mammadali Mehdiyev from Azerbaijan, who threw Frenchman Axel Clerget, the bronze medallist from Paris, with 70 seconds left on the clock.

The second bronze went to Nemanja Madjdov from Serbia who beat Max Stewart from Great Britain.

In the women's 78kg class Madeleine Malonga from France beat the Düsseldorf Grand Slam bronze medallist Klara Apotekar from Slovenia for the third time in a row, to take gold.

The first bronze was taken by Audrey Tcheumeo, another Frenchwoman, who beat the defending champion Shori Hamada from Japan by ippon.

The second bronze meanwhile was taken by Anna Maria Wagner from Germany, who beat her compatriot Luise Malzahn, the 18-time Grand Prix medallist, with an ouchi-gari for ippon.

In the women’s over-78kg category Slovenia’s Olympic bronze medallist Anamari Velensek won the gold despite being the lightest in the division.

She beat Nihel Cheikh Rouhou from Tunisia, by locking her in a juji-gatame for ippon.

It means Velensek now has six Grand Prix gold medals.

The first bronze medal went to Yelyzaveta Kalanina from Ukraine, as her opponent Kayra Sayit from Turkey withdrew with a knee injury.

The second bronze went to Sarah Asahina from Japan who beat Maryna Slutskaya from Belarus.

Russia gained their first gold medal of the competition thanks to Niyaz Ilyasov in the men’s under-100kg class.

He beat the three-time Grand Slam silver medallist Kyle Reyes from Canada.

In that category Kentaro Ida from Japan took the first bronze by beating Danylo Hutsol from Ukraine, while the second bronze went to Georgia’s Lasha Taveluri who beat Elkhan Mammadov from Azerbajian by holding him in a pin for 20 seconds.

The final class, the men’s over-100kg, was won by another Georgian, the Tbilisi Grand Prix champion Guram Tushishvili.

He won his second Grand Prix gold medal of the year by beating the Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Or Sasson from Israel by ippon after just 91 seconds.

In that class, the first bronze was won by Inal Tasoev from Russia in just seven seconds, as he beat Ruan Isquierdo from Brazil with a huge sode for ippon.

The second bronze was won by Yakiv Khammo from Ukraine who beat the European Championship bronze medallist Stephan Hegyi from Austria.
