The Greek women’s water polo team today earned a place in the final of the European Water Polo Championships in Barcelona, having maintained their focus in a competition which has held minutes of silence to mark the wildfires that have ttragically taken more than 70 lives in Greece this week.

Greece, who have earned two European silvers but never yet a gold, reached the final with an 11-9 win over the hosts, Spain in this European Swimming Federation (LEN) competition at the Piscines Bernat Picornell.

They will be the underdogs in the final on Friday (July 27), where they are due to meet The Netherlands, 8-7 winners over Hungary today.

The Netherlands have won 11 European medals, including four golds, and they will be playing in their third consecutive final.

That said, their last win was in 1993, and the lost to Spain at Budapest 2014 and Hungary at Belgrade 2016.

Greece took home the Europa Cup in March 2018.

Hungary and Spain will contest the bronze medal on Friday.

The two countries faced each other on the first day of the competition, Spain winning 13-9.

The men's competition is due to resume tomorrow.
